What do you get if you cross a ping-pong party in Iceland and a Paul McCartney doll head with a set of synths, samplers and drum sticks? For LA-based musician, composer & producer Brendan Angelides, the result was a pivotal Tiny Desk performance which teleported his electronic antics into score writing for TV, film and video games. Bob Boilen, the man behind the desk and fellow table tennis guest, referred to Angelides as ‘part musician, part magician.

Angelides has traced his own path of sound for the past two decades, as both a solo artist and collaborator, conjuring releases under his former moniker ‘ESKMO’ with labels Ninja Tune, Interscope, Warp, Planet Mu and Apollo, as well as his own imprint, Ancestor.

With his new album "Oxygen", Angelides presents his most personal work to date. Becoming a father to twins in 2020, he channels the dimensions of bringing new life into the world while processing one of the twins’ diagnosis of cerebral palsy. ‘Stepping into parenthood for anyone is chaotic, and my little girl’s condition was another foreign, unknown place,’ he reflects. ‘We just had to take one minute at a time and dance with the process. Writing “Oxygen” out of that place was an embodiment of rolling with the flow of life while distilling it into something that therapeutically felt right.’

It arrives at a new horizon of his output, the first release under his given name after dropping “ESKMO”, intertwining his electronic palette with an array of orchestral incantations performed by the London Contemporary Orchestra, orchestrated by Robert Ames.

In 2013, Angelides co-founded The Echo Society alongside a group of LA composers — It gathers to inspire, challenge, and enrich the community through the creation and performance of new sonic and visual art presented during singular, one-night-only experiences. As a collective, they have so far presented sold out experiences in the LA area within a variety of unique locations. A roster of international guests have taken part.

In 2015, he created FeelHarmonic.org which connects creatives, from a variety of fields, to collaborate on bringing the deaf community new ways to experience sound. They develop hands-on events that engage and excite while fostering a sense of exploration, communication and connection. These events are brought to schools, educational institutions and communal centers.

LA TIMES

"Angelides’ sterile yet somehow soulful contribution to “Billions” perfectly matches the overall mood, in a way that heightens the show’s psychological anxiety and the frosty exchanges between characters."
